A Question About Compassion

In Phantom of the Opera,  Christine’s compassion for the Phantom leads to his redemption and transformation:  he lets Raoul and Christine go free, he himself is set free from his bitterness and hatred, and he escapes the mob after physically transforming himself to elude capture.

Think about other stories you have read or seen in which a character  showed compassion for another.  How did that compassionate act change a character or move the story in a new direction?  Name the story or character and share your observations.

Another way to think about the question is to turn it around:  Can you think about a story in which the withholding of compassion has turned a character or a story in a direction different from where it might have otherwise gone?

Can these questions apply to nonfiction as well as to fiction?  You may answer with a nonfiction example if you prefer.

Write a comment in order to respond to the question, or respond by elaborating on another student’s comment.

  1. In Lois Lowry’s The Giver, Jonas beings to feel compassion for the baby Gabriel. When the baby cries, he wants to comfort him. Later, he finds out the baby is going to be killed. In order to rescue the child, he abruptly changes the careful plan that he and the Giver have made. His compassion for Gabriel changed the plot of the story: Jonas leaves weeks before he was ready, and the reader is left to wonder if he and the baby survived.

    • Another way in which The Giver explores compassion is with the character Rosemary, the daughter of the Giver. She felt so much compassion for the people in her memories that she couldn’t bear the pain of their experiences. She decided to end her life rather than feel those feelings. This loss of a candidate for Giver made the society more cautious in their selection process, putting more pressure on Jonas to be successful in his role.

    • In “brother bear” the big bear Kenai showed compassion to the little bear coda. By taking him to the to the salmon run. Kenai provided protection to the little bear from the hunter.

  2. In Charles Dickens The Christmas Caorl, Scrooge began to feel compassion when all the angles told him how he might be treated in heaven or in hell. Like when he went to his nephews house, Fredrick or when he gave his worker a big turkey and more money.

    • Scrooge donates to a orphanage and lives his life and tries to make people happy and give them time off work. He helps people and gives people things.

      • Yes I totally agree with your post. Scrooge felt remorse when he saw the children, and families that were poor and didn’t have anything to eat at night, or when they would bundle up on cold nights and sleep on the floor with barley any blanket.

      • Also in The Christmas Choral, Scrooge’s depressing life is briefly enlightened by Fezziwig’s, Scrooge’s master, compassion. Feziwig’s compassion allowed Scrooge to open his heart enough for him to fall in love with Bell, leaving him broken when Bell rejected him. All of this made Scrooge who he was in the book.

      • I strongly agree because he started out being this old grinch but when the angles started showing him compassion and that he would die with so many chains and so he realized the way he treated people and at the end he changed to a loving person who everyone liked! I loved that book.

    • I can agree with this post. At the beginning, Scrooge was a cold-hearted, mean, stingy man who didn’t care for anyone but himself. Through the trials of the 3 spirits, he learned to show love and compassion to his friends and family as well as a good amount of generosity. I think we can learn from Scrooge and strive to be the person he has become.

  3. In John Flanagans The Royal Ranger, Will is saddend and set on revenge for his wife’s death. His friends are worried he is being consumed with anger so they give him an apprentice to take his mind off of it. The apprentice shows understanding because he is her godfather. His mind is distracted until they are assigned a mission involving the killer. Together that catch the killer and Will is no longer bitter.

  4. In J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone, Lily Potter gave her life to protect her son, Harry. This compassion left a mark on Harry, which protected him from Voldemort’s evil curse, and banished the Dark Lord for 11 years.

    • Another way in Harry Potter where someone showed compassion is in the final book when Hermione erases her parents memorie of her so they won’t get killed when voldemort tries to find her so he can get to Harry.

    • Another example of compassion in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry shows compassion to the people in Hogwarts. When the school gets a threaten by lord Voldemort, Harry makes a walk to sacrifice him self for the well being of his only true home and family, Hogwarts. Harry sacrifices him self just like his mom did for him when he was a baby. His act of compassion leads to a end of the Voldemort reign and all is well at Hogwarts.

  5. In the Phantom of the Opera, Christine showed compassion for the Phantom by kissing him. The Phantom is touched and releases Christine and Raoul to the above world. The Phantom is free from hate, vengeance, depression, and free from the dark and goes away.

In the last two chapters, Scout make sure of Boo’s “need” for darkness, and she leads him to the darkest seat on the porch. She also understands that Boo wants to see Jem one last time, and even she even lets Boo touch Jem’s head, even though he’s asleep with a broken arm. She also helps and escorts Boo home when he asked her to walk him home. She also puts herself in Boo’s skin, and “sees” what Boo’s life has been for the past two years in the darkness. As you can see, Scout showed compassion to Boo.

  9. In Beowulf by Robert Nye, Beowulf showed compassion for the people who live in the kindom with Hrothgar as their king. By showing compassion for the lives lost, Beowulf killed Grendel. If Beowulf hadn’t showed compassion, perhaps the monster wouldn’t be killed and the Horothgar might still be in trouble.

    • Another way in which the book Beowulf showed compassion was when the character Unferth showed compassion towards Grendel, the large slimy beast of the book. When Beowulf slain the beast, Unferth had a fit of fury and rushed out into the evil marsh. Later his decapitated head was found impaled on a wooden post outside of the entrance to Grendel’s mother’s home. When this happened, everyone that was ruled by Hrothgar were confused, and even beowulf was obviously discouraged slightly from going to confront Grendel’s mother.

  10. In The Rules of Survival by Nancy Werlin, a character named Murdoch shows compassion that molded this story into the amazing piece of writing it became. Matthew Walsh and his younger sister Callie see this characters act of courage and compassion. Believing that Murdoch can help protect him and his siblings from their mother’s abuse, Matthew and Callie search and search for this “guardian Angel”. • Another example of showing compassion in The Hunger Games is when Peeta Mellark shows compassion to Katniss Everdeen, his District 12 lover. While Katniss was lying in the rain, lonely, cold, and hungry, Peeta (who worked at a bakery) saw her from a far distance and decided to throw her a piece of burnt bread. He helped Katniss in her time of struggle, leading to the possibility of fighting in the games with her. If Peeta hadn’t done this, then Katniss could’ve likely not been in the story.

  13. In the book “Legend” by Marie Lu, a character named June showed compassion to a character named Day, and this changed the entire plot. Day was charged with murder and June, a government agent, went in undercover to bring him in to the government. She soon discovered that Day had been framed, and started feeling compassion for him. • In A Christmas Carol, Scrooge showed no compassion for any one even though his nephew and a few others showed compassion toward him. The three spirits came to show him what the peoples lives were like whom he showed no compassion toward. On Christmas Day he changed his ways and showed compassion to everyone and everything by performing various charitable acts.

He ends up hurting the main bully so badly that he has to go to the hospital, and the generals of the kid’s army against the buggers are impressed with Ender’s reasoning for hurting him, they recruited him into the army. Rue was the closest thing Katniss had to family in the arena. They became a great team, and Rue wished her luck before she died.

    • Another example from The Hunger Games is when Katniss risked her life to save Peeta. Katniss goes to the cornucopia to get the bag with the medicine for Peeta. She showed them that someone could trust them and that if they helped each other then they could defeat the tyrant king.
